Lalith Weeratunga’s passport released by courts on payment of Rs 100 Lakhs

The secretary to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Lalith Weeratunga’s passport was impounded by courts after he was named as  suspect in the misappropriation of a large sum of government funds at the TRC to import “Sil” clothing prior to the last presidential election. This was ordered to prevent from him going overseas.

However the attorney at law appearing for the former Presidential secretary had requested courts to release the passport of his client as he wished to travel to India on a pilgrimage.

The request was considered on the production of a bond for a sum of rupees one hundred thousand. Accordingly on production of the bond the passport had been released on the instructions of the Chief
Magistrate of the Colombo Magistrates courts NV Karunatilleke on the 03rd instant. But the period had been restricted for two weeks from the 30th August to 15th September.

The attorney General has filed a case for the misappropriation of a sum of rupees 600 million from the TRC for importation and distribution of “Sil” clothing during the period of the last presidential election..
