What is the underhand deal for Namal to be arrested?

Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa who was taken into custody this afternoon by police has been remanded till next 18th; for a period of one week. this arrest, Mahinda Rajapaksa and supporters claim is none other than political revenge. Whatever it is, there should be a strong reason for him to be taken into custody without stopping with
interrogating him.

As reported to us, the FCID has named is as an underhand deal. Though it is not possible to prove a financial fraud that easily without cash being credited to a bank account Namal has been cornered in this respect. The closest reason in this instance for Namal being taken into custody is a confession made by the former Chairman of Carlton Rugby Association that Namal was given a ransom of 7 crores.

When the Mahinda regime was making preparations to sell a plot of land of four and a half acres belonging to the old army headquarters situated in Galle Face zone and when there were a countless number of buyers competing to purchase it, the government at that time had arrived at the decision to give the land to an Indian Company called Kris on the advice of Namal. The allegation against Namal then is that Namal had done so after having acquiring this ransom. Whatever it is, what the police say is that it was revealed at investigations that it was not a transaction that was carried out in a straightforward manner.

Kris Company has paid this money to an Account of the Chairman of Carlton Nimal Perera. Nimal Perera in turn had turned that payment into cash notes and had handed over the entire sum of monies to the hands of Namal Rajapaksa which Nimal Perera had confessed on interrogation, it has been exposed at police investigations.

When Namal Rajapaksa was questioned about this he had admitted that the said sum of money was accepted from Nimal Perera to his hands but that it was a form of grant given to the Carlton Rugby Tournament and that the money had been spent. Though Nimal Perera who had been the Chairman of Carlton Sports Association at that time had provided such a sum of money on behalf of organising a tournament what the police subsequently enquired into was whether Namal truly directed that money for that purpose.

However, what was revealed at investigations was that the eight sports clubs who participated in that instance for the rugby tournament had had footed the expenses by securing the sponsors themselves. Finally Namal has not been able to that he had been able to spend any monies of the 7 crores he had been given by Kris Company.
