Youth kidnapped in Wariyapola -- Update 2

After the police were successful in rescuing the 20 year old son of businessman who was kidnapped in Wariyapola town the police have been able to understand the background story behind it. It had been a Hybrid type of motor car which had been used to abduct the boy when he was taking dinner for the employees. Though a
person who was in the locality where the boy was kidnapped gave evidence about it the police could not obtain the number of the vehicle as such. Just 20 minutes after the kidnapping the kidnappers had contacted the businessman and from there onwards the police were involved in this operations. But the businessman had hidden about it from the ransom-seekers and each and every time they had contacted him over the phone the police intelligence unit had been involved and they had been engaged in an attempt of tracking the location from where the telephone waves were being released. As such the police team who were deployed to gauge the manner in which the calls were connected were able to find that it was from a place in Wariyapola and Mahawa. In order to trace localities where white Hybrid vehicles close to that place could be detected in Wariyapola town the police were on their toes. During the period when that procedure was in action, the police then instructed the businessman to consent to the amount of money the ransom-seekers had claimed and to answer the incoming calls from them to that effect. Therefore the businessman had attempted to hand over 85 lakhs to these ransom-seekers. In the meantime the picture of the youth who was taking this money and was sent on 'the rounds' was sent to various places and were on the lookout enquiringly whether the police were behind this. Exactly as it was realised that the police were behind them they had decided to change their settings.

It was during that time the police came to know that the gang of Hiriyale Suda was linked to this episode. Having made a secret connection with one of their members and working out things, information as to where exactly the Hybrid vehicle used in the operations were, could be found. As such, the police who visited the house of the owner of the Hybrid vehicle took into custody the owner of the vehicle and another suspect as well.

Whatever it is, the kidnapped boy was not at that place. The suspect had confessed that he had been kept detained at a house in Mahawa area. Four persons who came to know that their 'boss' was arrested,  had fled the Mahawa house at that moment  and had left the kidnapped youth near a clocktower in Nikaweratiya area and had beat a retreat. The young man who was thus abandoned halfway had approached a shop closeby and contacted the number 119 and subsequently the boy's home-people together with the police arrived at the place and eventually rescued him.

It was Hiriyale Suda's gang who was responsible for this abduction. They were all six in number. The person who was taken into custody in fact happened to be a leader of the Pyramid racket. It was said that he was someone who was equipped with an Engineering Degree at the Moratuwa campus. The other person was someone who had been employed at a garment concern. The police are making a search on the son of a grama niladhari in the area and 4 others to be arrested in this connection.

The house in which the businessman's son was retained at a house in Mahawa incidentally is owned by the grandmother of one of the suspects. The woman who gave permission to use the house for this activity when subjected to questioning by the police had said that the son had asked for the keys of this house saying that an Engineer gentleman was seeking lodging there.

The Engineer suspect on the other hand had admitted that as the capital for the Pyramid racket which he was operating was not sufficient enough he had abducted the boy and claimed a ransom with the purpose of strengthening his activities. Though they had introduced a system to the public in Nikaweratiya and Wariyapola areas where it was told that they would be able to draw a large interest had asked them to deposit cash and had even launched a campaign of publicity. But the programme had not hit the bull's eye.

They had thus thought about it and engaged in this kidnapping activity with the intention of using the ransom money to uplift their project while the businessman who became their target and he being someone who knows most of these ransom-seekers is indeed something of a special feature in this context. Further investigations are underway.
