phenomenon.
The name Roanu has been decided to be given to this cyclone by the Indian Weather Department which happens to be in charge of the Zone of Bay of Bengal. This name has been given because it is comparatively easy to identify a name such as that in the case of a cyclone which usually causes a great destruction and for the purpose of easy useage when reporting about it and also for future analysis too. Prior to this when names were nominated in the year 2006 to identify cyclones in the North Indian Sea Zones, this name 'Roanu' proposed by the Maldive Islands has been chosen in this connection. The term Roanu is understood by Diveni language of the Maldives as 'coir rope'.
When perusing the manner in which the cyclone has taken its route, it in fact has twisted itself and had prepared to find its way across Sri Lanka, India, Bangla Desh and eventually Mianmar. For the purpose of suggesting names this way, not only the Maldives but even Sri Lanka, India, Bangla Desh, Oman, Mianmar, Pakistan and Thailand too have proposed various names. Among names nominated by Sri Lanka were Mala, Rashmi, Bandu, Mahasen, Priya, Asiri, Gigum and Soba. (A criticism surfaced about the name Mahasen). Among all names suggested this time, it is the name Roanu selected by the Maldives which has finally been selected. The names already made use of and those expected to be used in future are given below
