Because of the announcement 'major flood situation', residents of the Kelani River valley which is risk-prone have been advised by the government to leave their abodes and move into safety locations. Whatever it is, since the electricity supply in the environment has been
incapacitated, this message has not properly reached their attention and it is reported that people in those areas are still in a risky situation.

By afternoon today the water level of the Kelani River has risen in a big way and the Irrigation Department has informed that it has developed into a state which results in a major flood situation. What they say is that the water level of Nagalagam Street has by now risen over 7 feet. The Irrigation Engineer in charge of the Colombo Zone, Mr. G.K. Padmasiri had said that this is a major flood situation and that quick measures should be taken in this connection. The Irrigation Engineer further cautions residents around low-lying areas of Kelan River valley to be vigilant about this.
