Probe against eloped Principal and teacher at Mahanama College -- Update
A case of an incident of eloping was reported recently across the media where the Principal of a frontline boys school, Mahanama College in Colombo had eloped on the sly with a married teacher of that school. Government authorities had commenced an enquiry into this matter. However, for some reason or the other it has now been diverted in a different direction, it was reported.
The Secretary of the Education Department, Mr. M. Bandusena has given a statement to the Daily Mirror newspaper last 9th saying that the Education Ministry has started an enquiry in this connection but that until the information in that respect is confirmed the results cannot be exposed. However what that Secretary has told the Rivira newspaper two days prior to that on last 11th was because that incident deals with a personal matter, no necessity has still arisen for the Ministry of Education to take any steps regarding that issue.
The Lanka Guru Sangamaya has expressed their criticism in this connection saying that since this is a case which is related to a disciplinary matter concerning a Principal of a prominent school in Colombo and the disciplinary and administrative activities of the school could suffer as a result and further this could turn out to be a detrimental precedent to other schools as well.
In the second statement given by the Secretary of the Education Ministry Mr. M. Bandusena he had mentioned that no complaint has been received by the Ministry and that because it deals with a personal issue, there is no legal possibility in mediating on this matter and though it is so, he is able only to enquire into press reports regarding the matter and look into the matter. The Secretary also added that if a court decision is given by the police, only then some action would be taken in respect of the said Principal and the teacher concerned for having violated disciplinary procedures. Though the Secretary has mentioned that further action cannot be taken with regard to the Principal, what Education Ministry sources reveal is that the husband of the said teacher has complained in writing to the Ministry of Education last week. It is stated in that complaint that a toddler aged one and a half years old who was in his custody had been abducted and that the child is now living with an aged father of two children.
