special speech which trigerred encouragement and alacrity in the minds of his officers.
He stated that during the past the police kept a distance from the public and for that reason the trust in the police by the public was damaged. He further said that the Police would no longer be a Department and requested that it be identified as 'Sri Lanka Police'. The IGP said that the foremost responsibility of the police is to concentrate on the safety, law and peace in the country after the war. Therefore he mentioned that police officers should be able to meet the demand according to the requirement. Just as much as when an item does not meet its demand the price increases what happens is that public disapproval would increase when supply of the police does not meet their demand. He went on the say that in future steps would be taken to focus attention on 6 primary factors including education, health, religion and sports across a mobile service at every police station and work towards that purpose. In the same way, programmes would be launched to extract the maximum service from civil security committees which are on a grama niladhari level. He added that if police officers who are expected to exercise law are to violate that law, a maximum course of action would be implemented at the earliest possible. Finally he went on to mention that 'a peaceful environment where it is possible to live with faith devoid of any fear about crime and violence' which is the basic vision of Sri Lanka Police would be developed and carried forward without just limiting it only to sentences.
