Mother and daughter killed in Dematagoda accident

An agitated situation was seen last night in Dematagoda area. The reason for it was that a car travelling towards Dematagoda at Mount Mary along Baseline Road had run over a mother and daughter who were going across to the other side at the crossing and the driver had
scooted off. This tragedy had taken place around 8.30 in the night and as a result a 47 year old mother and her 10 year old daughter breathed their last. The other daughter who were accompanying them had been able to just scrape through without brushing against the vehicle. All three of them were residents of T Vissawaththa in Dematagoda and members of the same family.

After the accident though the neighbourhood took action to admit both of them to hospital, they had succumbed because their injuries were serious. The person who drove the vehicle and committed this accident had beat a retreat and after the police launched a search to nab him finally they succeeded in getting at him in Grandpass. A statement was taken from him and on investigations carried out it was revealed that this person was a minor aged 15 years and was a schoolboy. The boy who is supposed to be studying at a leading international school in Colombo was thus not old enough to obtain a driving licence either. The person who permitted him to drive this vehicle too is expected to be taken into police custody.

After the said tragedy people around Dematagoda area had surrounded Dematagoda Police and had forced them to take the person concerned into custody and the former Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana had addressed the crowd using a microphone saying that the suspect had been arrested and to keep calm. Judicial proceedings is to be effected in respect of the student in the future. Further enquiries are been taken in this connection.
