With the withdrawal of vehicle permits in the budget proposals for 2016 the government has decided to allow those Members of Parliament who do not have money to import vehicles to
purchase a vehicle via a term loan from Bank of Ceylon to be repaid in five years. The monthly instalment in that case to be recovered from the  monthly salary.

This had been decided at a meeting held at the parliament premises chaired by the Finance minister Ravi Karunanayake and the minister of parliamentary affairs Gayantha Karunatilleke.A number of Members of Parliament from both the government and the opposition had participated.

From the budget proposals 2016 the Members of Parliament who were earlier able to import duty free vehicles up to  rupees three hundred lakhs had been withdrawn.

In this connection the novice Members of Parliament had got displeased and a redress to them this proposal had been brought forward. In this connection a Member of Parliament could import any vehicle of their choice was emphasised by Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

In this regard when the Minister in charge of Parliamentary affairs is notified the type of vehicle a Member of Parliament needs , the Minister would make arrangements to pay the cost of the vehicle  at once or on a monthly basis.
