Couple found at Andahelena Waterfall had not committed suicide

An outsider had come and killed them!

The dead bodies of a young couple were found yesterday near the waterfall known as
Andahelena in Pituwala area, Elpitiya in the Southern Province. Though this was reported earlier as a case of suicide, according to investigations it has now been disclosed that it was a case of murder.

About 4 days earlier the deceased couple had parked the motor bicycle along the road reaching to Andahelena Waterfall at a spot where bikes were looked after safely and since they had not returned even after several days elapsed to retrieve the bike, on searching for them their dead bodies were discovered in a decomposed state. A vial of poison was found near the corpses while the woman's face was disfigured with monitors doing the damage.

The deceased was a 23 year old Army soldier named Ashan Jayasankha while the girl was an 18 year old schoolgirl by the name of Anusha Priyadarshani who is supposed to be his lover. Information has been received that both of them are residents of Nawandagala area. The householders say that they were carrying on a love affair between the two of them for the last 6 months or so. The young man who had been serving the Army had come for a holiday and on the 11th he had told his householders that he would be going to Kurundugahahethepma; so saying he had left home. The girl on the other hand had told her home-people and left home saying that she was going for a private class.

Parties on both sides of the girl and boy had been aware of their romance and there had been no objection to it either by them. The motor cycle caretaker had said that many lovers used to come there to the spot where bikes were parked in this manner and would proceed to the jungle area close to the waterfall to romance around. Likewise he was of the understanding that this couple too may have gone towards the waterfall with the same motive. Though it was observed that there was a vial of poison seen when the dead bodies were being examined and that it appeared that they had committed suicide, at the post-mortem conducted over the two corpses, the information gathered pointed to a case of murder where both of the deceased were concerned. By now it has been revealed that the cause of death was that the girl had been assaulted by a blunt instrument and that the boy had been strangled. The reason for this murder and who the assailant is has still not been revealed. Elpitiya Police are conducting further investigations.
