with new electronic ID card

The Department of Registrations of Persons have decided to implement a fresh scheme for the new
National Identity Card numeral system comprising of 12 numbers to be effective from next 1st of January.

What Mr. Devapriya said was that the new plan to be launched has already been prepared. The main characteristic according to the new numerical system is that the English letter is removed. According to the system now in operation, the first two letters of the present National Identity Card has been allocated to signify the last two digits of the year of birth. According to the new system the first four figures have all been allocated to indicate the whole year of birth. Apart from that, the Department of Registration of Persons inform that a zero is inserted before the last four digits.

As such, the new National Identity Card numeral system where only 12 figures comprise the ID number instead of the present 9 figures and the English letter is expected to take effect from the 1st of January next year. It is hoped to leave sufficient time for all citizens to change the existing identity card to the new one.
