A pathetic story of a two months old infant who died having been pressed under the body of his own brother on the bed where both

were sleeping in the night is reported from Anuradhapura yesterday.

The youngest infant of a poverty-stricken family in Vijayapura Jayasiripura in Anuradhapura died in this manner having been pressed under the body of his own brother who was 4 years old. There had been only one bed for this whole house and it was said that it was on this bed that the father, mother and the three children .... thus all five of them had slept. All these children were males and they were 5 years, 4 years and 2 months old respectively.

The deceased infant has still not been even given a name. The father who had got up at about 5 early morning to prepare tea had observed the small child being pressed under the 4 year old child and had taken steps to remove the victim from that place immediately and since he had noticed that the infant was not in a breathing condition the infant had been brought to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. However, the doctors who checked the infant confirmed that the child had already breathed his last.

The postmortem of the infant was conducted yesterday (6) at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and a verdict was returned that the infant had died as a result of suffocation with the brother's body being pressed over him.
