When Aruna Ranatunga of the UNP was operating as the Minister of Ports and Shipping, that same portfolio as Deputy Minister was bestowed upon Nishantha Muthuhettigama of the Alliance.

The ceremony of taking over duties by Muthuhettigama was held today and Arjuna too joined the function. The conversation between the two during this ceremony turned out to be dainty, in a sense.

Addressing the audience, Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigama spoke as follows: "My target is not to make commission. My favourite player is Arjuna Ranatunga. I say with responsibility that my favourite Minister in this government would turn out to be Arjuna Ranatunga before long. If I would be able to develop the Galle Port ... to make it strong .... that will be the victory that we'll achieve. Other than reaching towards that ... I am not a person who would bring the masses of Baddegama and fill the port and then go away by destroying the port".

Minister Arjuna Ranatunga had this to say: "I also want people who don't rob. I also want people who don't take kappam. I also want those who don't take commission. Won't let Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigama wait on a side. He came to work. The time that he strayed around is over. Now the time has come to run. Must be prepared to run with me. It won't be easy for him also to run. But in the next 5 years we two will get together and make this port an important establishment in this country".
