Island wide power failure attributed to "Low Demand" 


A committee had been established to peruse the reason for the Island wide power failure that took place for just over four hours on the 27th night from 11.53 pm up to around 4 am the following morning which had caused tremendous inconvenience to the public. Over the electronic media
several people had expressed their personal views on the inconveniences that caused to them.


The report of the committee appointed by the Ceylon Electricity Board to reveal to the public the reason for this total failure had reported that the reason had been owing to the much lower usage of power by all users owing to the inclement weather.

They had added that on a usual weekend the demand of the electricity amounts to 1900 mega watts .But on that particular night of the 27th instant the total demand for electricity had decreased to 1775 mega watts. In comparison this decrease is a drastic decrease and is an significant decrease. The committee appointed attributed to this decrease as it was a long week end and there were persistent rain.

They had confirmed that at 12,53 am the reduction in the electricity usage had dropped by a significant 940 mega watts. As a result the national electricity grid had become unstable and caused this total power failure was concluded by the findings of the committee.
