LONDON - LIFE OF KANCHANA MENDIS
Popular tele-actress Kanchana Mendis who was nominated for her best performance at the
Sumathi and Raigam Tele Awards recently is presently in England.
The husband of Kanchana who has 2 children by marriage to Kanchana is engaged in a profession in that country while she is spending her time with her children as a housewife in that country. After she came to Sri Lanka after some time she exposed further details about her UK life.
"We are living in 'Bushi'. It is a beautiful location close to the City of London. Roshan goes to work in the morning and comes in the evening. My son (Senitha) is now 5 years old. He is schooling. Daughter (Kesha) is now 2 years. She still does not go to school. I spend my time by attending to household chores and spend my time happily. I came to Sri Lanka after sometime. When I came for son's school holidays I attended the Sumathi Award Festival also. "Girikula" the tele-drama in which I acted for the last time was among the Award Festival. I also was nominated as the Best Actress. It was a happy moment to meet friends in the field of Arts after sometime. If I get an invitation for a good creation, I will even come to Sri Lanka and start acting. Other than that of course I can't undertake invitations. I am now very busy. Even over there, activities of cooking have been entrusted to me. Since I am the youngest in the family my elder sisters didn't even let me go to the kitchen. Even my work was done by my mother. Everybody said that I wouldn't be able to do the domestic work on my own when I got married and went away. I also had a bit of a doubt. But now I have got accustomed to this way of living. I now feel that it is also a pleasant experience. It's not so much of a difficult task of doing work of the two children and household chores. There are facilities in that country. I of course cook rice and the other thing is that vegetables and greens and everything is available in super-markets. What I give my children to eat and drink are Sri Lankan things. What I and Roshan eat also are Sri Lankan things. I get a lot of support from Roshan. He doesn't go to work early in the morning. Roshan goes in the afternoon and comes in the night. He can cook tasty foods. In the same way it is the duty of Roshan to go to the Supermarket and bring the food items.
"Girikula" teledrama of course I watched over the internet. I don't of course get a chance of watching all the teledramas that are broadcast now. But when our artistes come to England and perform I make it a point to go and see them. It is only rarely that I get a chance of meeting friends. Sasanthi Jayasekera lives a little distance away from where I live. But because of our busy schedules we don't meet each other. However we speak to each other over the phone.
I was at one time with the Arts and collected awards during that time. But I am not sorry that was not able to remain in that field right along. That's because when I see the some of the current teledramas I think that even if I am in Sri Lanka I wouldn't be able to take part in them.
In Sri Lanka of course even if we get on to the roads it is known people that we meet. In that country those connections are somewhat remote. In such cases of course I feel a bit isolated. But where facilities are concerned England is good where peace matters. But the life I lead with my husband and children is so pleasant.
