General Elections on August 17
President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to
dissolve parliament form midnight today (26 Friday). Relevant procedures to print the Gazette Notice in relation to the decision in all three languages has been arranged and news sources say that it has been sent to the Government Press for printing purposes.
A spokesman there has mentioned that as stated in the Gazette, the next General Election has been scheduled to be held on 17th August. The Gazette announces that nominations would be called for between July 6 - 13 and the meeting for the new parliament is expected to take place on September 1st.
Though there were rumours that the 20th Amendment would be approved in parliament and the parliament would be dissolved thereafter, it did not happen so. Although a rumour spread round all throughout the past few days that parliament would be dissolved, it has now become a reality. As such, the political world would be falling in line during the next 8 weeks for the General Elections.
