The Leader of the Opposition should be nominated from among the UPFA Members with bigger majority
The Speaker of the Parliament, Chamal
Rajapaksa who had told the House yesterday that he will have to study deeply in regard to the appointment of a new opposition leader in place of the present opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva.
However so quickly today he had suggested a solution to the request made through a letter signed by nearly 60 Members of the opposition to appoint Dinesh Gunawardena both representing the UPFA. He had explained that if at all someone else is appointed he also should be from the UPFA.
He had clearly explained that majority in the opposition comprises of Members of Parliament belonging to the UPFA. Both the present and the proposed leader of the opposition represent the UPFA. Hence nominations should be received from the UPFA as elected by the General Secretary of the party, Member of Parliament Susil Premajayantha via a private voting. Once the prospective candidates are nominated the Speaker would most appropriately forward them to the Secretary General of Parliament for his approval for the most suitable person for the post of leader of the opposition.
