drowns and dies in lake (video)
An unfortunate incident of a a young boy aged
19 years and living in Mattegoda area had gone to swim in a lake with some of his friends and had been swimming, competing with his friend and finally ended up by being drowned and passed away, it was reported yesterday.
The deceased is Kavinda Heshan Suriyaarachchi a young man living in Bandaranayakapura, Mattegoda. It was last afternoon that two of his friends had come on a motor cycle and had called over at his house around one o'clock last afternoon and invited him to accompany them to have a swim with them. They had as was the usual custom gone to Polgasowita Olupaththa Lake and altogether there had been a group of 12.
At the start, the deceased had been keeping watch over the articles of clothing etc, while 10 of his friends had got into the waters and he had by then not set his foot in the banks of the lake and after they had finished their swim and come back he had then proceeded with the other accomplice to swim in the lake and had even made a suggestion to him to compete with each other in swimming. On that occasion Heshan who had addressed another friend had even said, "machan .. video our race". On that occasion, Heshan together with his friend had started swimming from one end of the sluice gate to the other side and Heshan who was swimming from behind right from the start had at once drowned in the lake. At that moment the others have had no idea of rescuing their friend and when they tried to make any positive move, it had been too late. When his body was taken ashore, it was noticed that he had been in the waters in that drowning position too long a period.
