Some particulars of those who came in first three positions at the O/L examination the results of which was released yesterday are shown below. The effort and courage they displayed in climbing up this ladder and trod on this journey can well be the example for students engaged in school studies. Their details are as follows:

Tharindu Wickramasingha of Nalanda College, Colombo has won first place in the island at the General Certificate of Education Examination by securing the highest marks.
Tharindu's father is an accountant. The mother who was at home is supposed to be his shadow behind this victory, so to say. Tharindu had been studying at Nalanda College from the first class. This is
what Tharindu said. "I went for extra classes also. Even from my small days I managed my own time. I am an external member of chess, badminton and the Astronomy Society. I also like to play the violin. As much as education, I liked sports too. I am studying for the advanced level in the Maths stream.

Sandini Nivanjana Jayawardena of Holy Cross Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha has come second place.
Her father is a technical officer at the Ratmalana Branch workshop of the Sri Lanka Railway Department while her mother happens to be a nurse at Gampaha Hospital.
Sandini has received her education right from the first class at this school. Though having secured 171 marks even from the scholarship exam and come first in the whole school her parents had tried to send her to another school; but they had later changed their idea as the lady-principal had made a promise that she would be promoted to a higher level. What Mary Deepani, the Sister and lady-principal had told expressing her ideas in this connection is that this student was the student who got the highest number of marks at the scholarship exam from the entire school. "Steps were being taken by the parents to send her to another school. I promised them that she would be given the opportunity of rising higher in her education. As such, we are absolutely so happy about this student who has been placed second in the whole island".
Sandini is thankful to her school and says she wishes to study for the A/Ls in the Maths stream.

It is D.S.G. Amashi Nivarthana, student of Colombo Visakha Vidyalaya who is placed in one of the three positions of those who came into third place in the entire island. She has had her education at Ambalangoda Dharmashoka Vidyalaya initially and having passed her scholarship exam later entered Visakha Vidyalaya. Her mother Thanuja Kariyawasam is a housewife. Thanuja's father is not among the living.
This is what Amashi says: "At home my mother managed the work at home and prepares the time and environment necessary for my studies. What should be done that day I did that day itself without putting it off. I'll do the advanced level from the Biology stream. I have a strong determination to
become a doctor or a scientist.

Another position of the three places won in the island has been claimed by Nuwani Nethsarani of Gampaha Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya.
Nethsarani is the second child in the family. The father himself serves at Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya as a teacher of Chemistry while the mother is the principal of Gorakadeniya Primary School. Nethsarani has passed the scholarship exam of grade 5 from Pattalagedera Vidyaloka Vidyalaya after which she has gained admission to Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya.
This is what she has to say: "As extra curricular activities I was engaged in hockey, badminton, chess and sports like swimming. I attended to the school-work given in school that day itself. I worked according to a time-table. I always did reading and watching rupavahini news. More than that it was my parents and sister and my teachers who had big hopes about me. I am happy that I could fulfill that.

A.A. Garuni Abeysingha student of Kandy Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya was able to be placed among the three who claimed third position in the whole island at the O/L exam.
Her mother is a housewife. The father was a doctor and had passed away last year. She reminisces about how her father took pains to coach her up in studies at the time he was occupied as a doctor. Garuni who excelled in writing in the English Language is also a contributor to newspapers. Garuni who had been studying at Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya from the first year is the youngest in a family of three. Her elder brother is an undergraduate at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura and is following studies at the Medical Faculty there. While studying at Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya Garuni hopes to sit for the Advanced Level Exam this year in the Maths stream. After completing her studies Garuni hopes to dedicate herself to an occupation of community service in which her father himself was involved in.
