How Jayantha Ketagoda later played a game on General after saying he likes to give his seat to him!
General Sarath Fonseka was able to secure a seat by contesting at the last general election on behalf of the Democratic Front and when he was
subsequently imprisoned, this seat was acquired by Jayantha Ketagoda of the same Party. It happened that the very day that Tissa Atthanayaka switched over to the Alliance during the Presidential Election period, Ketagoda who isolated himself from Fonseka in order to provide his own support to the president did not come forward to face Fonseka after that.
When the new government came into power recently Ketagoda invited the public media and made a special statement saying that he is prepared to hand over his seat to the General once more. On that occasion what he said was that after listening to a request made across another person by the General he is ready to bestow his seat. Since by then General Fonseka was stripped of his voting rights, Ketagoda said that he would acquire that Right and after receiving approval from the Election Commissioner he would resign on his own if the exchange of the parliamentary seat is in accordance with the legal procedure and then bestow it.
As such as General Fonseka got back his total voting rights and all powers after a few days and the Election Commissioner too mentioned that under these circumstances General Fonseka is in a position to be handed over a parliamentary seat.
Though the Fonseka segment was looking forward to Jayantha Ketagoda's verbal promise on the occasion to materialize as promised, Ketagoda was not to be seen in parliament continuously. He had avoided even those who tried to get at him and General Fonseka now realized that he had changed within a space of just a few days.
Ketagoda who tried to make Mahinda the President now takes steps to create a barrier for General Fonseka coming back to parliament on somebody's instigation. By whom such instructions were given is still not clear.
In the process, General Fonseka who addressed the media said that he would not bend down to anybody to get back the parliamentary seat which he had to forego. He also said that even without his parliamentary seat he could provide service to the public further and that in order to see that justice in this connection is done he would seek the assistance of the judiciary. This is what he said:
"Parliament member Jayantha Ketagoda said in public that he left us and went to the President to grant me what I had lost. This parliament member who said so has still not done what he had promised. I got back my freedom in the most unexpected manner. Now Mr. Ketagoda is facing a problem and is like a trapped man is saying various things. That is to avoid handing over the seat. But to get back that seat I am not prepared to fall down at his feet. In any case we are going to seek the assistance of the law to settle this issue".
