Teachers assault two students
for worshiping Principal who prevented changing name of Mahinda Rajapaksha College
Steps taken by new Minister of Education for changing the name of Homagama Mahinda
Rajapaksha College and the queer procedure of continuing school work upto 3 in the evening aroused a debatable situation. However, the Principal concerned had certified that such a change would not be effected; after meeting and discussing matters with officials of the ministry.
This new decision was not to the liking of a certain group of teachers in the school. In the process, after announcing the decision at a meeting, an agitating situation had taken place yesterday. The agitated set of teachers and the Principal were both involved in a misunderstanding with each other and the Principal had left the school after a short while at which moment 5 students had approached him rushing towards him to worship him when the said group of teachers had assaulted the students, it is learned.
The 5 students who were so assaulted then had gone and lodged a complaint with Homagama Police while 2 of these students had admitted themselves to Homagama Hospital.
Parents had been summoned yesterday by the School Development Society for a meeting to make them get an idea about what was stated in a letter issued by the Ministry of Education regarding a rumour that has spread about the name of the school is to be changed and that the extra activities that were being taking place in the school was to be stopped by the Ministry of Education. On this occasion the Principal had announced to the parents that the name of the school is not to be changed and there would be no influence made on the extra activities either.
Subsequently, after the meeting came to a close, a difference of opinion had arisen between a group of teachers and the Principal. This is what Mr. Chaminda Abeygoonasekera, the Secretary of the school Development Society had to say regarding this incident. "There is a methodology in which the school was being conducted. The school went on till 3.30 in the afternoon. Both male and female students dressed in national costume on Fridays. In the same way, there was a 'seela vyaparaya' on Poya Days. The Minister of Education gave us a confirmation in writing that this procedure would not be changed. At the moment the Principal was announcing this to the parents, there was an uproar by a set of teachers at the back of the hall vehemently opposing it. Later however the parents dispersed. There ensued a dialogue between the teachers and the Principal. After about one hour later we came to hear that the Principal was to go away. The Principal was under a lot of mental pressure. About 10 students were rushing behind this Principal who happened to be in tears. About 10 teachers in this school are involved in sabotaging activities in this school", he finally said.
Homagama Police are conducting inquiries over the incident.
