Popular Bollywood star Salman Kahn who arrived in Sri Lanka early morning day before yesterday departed from the island last night (30) itself.
It is a tendency in recent times for people to get up and flee from the place one is staying after tasting hoppers. Last night at about 11.30 before departing all of a sudden to India he had tasted hoppers at Jaqueline's Kema Sutra Restaurant.
His arrival here became an incident which created a big dialogue in local politics.
Until the moment he, together with Jaqueline and 5 other Indian actors - actresses left from India, The Indian media were not aware where he was bound to while only India Times had reported that he and Jaqueline and the crowd had departed from Mumbai Airport to an unknown destination on an year-ending tour. After setting off on a jet airways plane, he had emerged from Katunayaka Airport in Sri Lanka.
However there was nobody to welcome him there. They then left to Taj Samudra. After resting in the hotel, Salman Kahn had gone to a health camp conducted at Borella Campbel Park. Namal Rajapaksha, Thilanga Sumathipala and the others who were there had welcomed them and subsequently while he was on stage, the President too had arrived there and posed for photos which depicted various activities of the said eye clinic.
Though this ceremony was conducted with the participation of just a few as a social hospitality programme; because of the photo which gripped the attention of the election, with scenes portraying the President and Salman seated there on a small stage managed to create a great impression for political publicity purposes.
One of the incidents reported during that ceremony was that the announcer addressing the audience had said, "Shahruk Kahnta jayawewa!" Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksha then corrected him and then the confused announcer announced, "Salman Kahnta jayawewa!" Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala, parliamentarian who organised the ceremony too was present on stage when this happened.
Salman Kahn who has become a millionaire by acting in Bollywood films is another actor who says that he would never get married. He is someone who constantly engages in social activities as a habit. Though on this occasion he participated at this event with social service in mind, it was parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksha who invited him for this occasion and was nevertheless aware that this get together was important from a political view in mind.
He in fact made friendships with Salman Kahn previously when Salman participated in the AIFA Award ceremony in Sri Lanka. Salman Kahn's sister got married 2 months before this and Salman Kahn happened to invite Namal to a party in the house after the wedding, in India. He in fact went there and even posed for a photo.
Sometime back Salman and actress Jaqueline, the latter born in Sri Lanka played the main roles in the Hindi film 'Kik'. Since the two of them had associated very closely for propaganda work at that time in India, rumours began to spread that the two of them had a liason. As they wanted the film to have a good run in the theatres, they did not deny the rumour. Because of their connection it was easy for Jaqueline to escort Salman to Sri Lanka.
When Salman was being garlanded in Borella, stones were hailed at a group of Sri Lankan artistes in Kumbukgete. These two contrasting events resulted in creating an unfavourable position for Mahinda from a political angle. In the meantime Vaiko of DMK Party supporters of Indian Tigers began to make allegations against Salman's arrival here, based on media reports, interpreting this situation from a political point of view saying that Salman is a 'traitor'.
When Salman was spending his first night here, the political set up was on fire. Talk spread around the fact that artistes were attacked and about those who came to the island on the same day. The point as to why foreign film stars are necessary to do politics in Sri Lanka was a question that came up. Common Candidate Maithreepala Sirisena said that Salman was brought to Sri Lanka for 700 million. However what the government on the contrary keeps on saying is that he was not brought here for political propaganda.
On the day Salman set foot in this country, the media was not permitted to speak to him, by the security forces. But he spoke the next day. "Four years before this I came here for the AIFA Award Festival. I got close to Namal Rajapaksha and his family. Then after that I came here for the Reddy film. I came here for social welfare work. This is what we do. There's no politics in it. The President is a miraculous person. Four years before this it took me one and a half hours to get to a hotel in Sri Lanka .... but now it takes only 20 minutes".
Last evening Salman stepped into visit Jaqueline's hotel with her and the hotel is situated at the Arcade at Independence Square in Colombo.
Fleeing instantly after tasting hoppers from whatever place you are has become a modern trend in Sri Lanka. Likewise, around 11.30 last night Salman had once again returned to India. His tour was a short one. When he left, his name was not to be seen on the visitors' departure list. Therefore what the media say is that his departure is suspicious and that it was not a planned one; but a sudden one for that mater. Whether Salman was to engage in other activities here or not has not been publicised anywhere. What the Twitter Account of Salman says is that he had attended a social hospitality programme on the invitation of Namal
Rajapaksha.
