How body builder who opposed dengue control ....
got a beating from UC labourers (video)
An incident is reported where two dengue control officers who went from house to house on the dengue control programme in Negombo area were prohibited from entering the house of a certain householder who said is a 'body builder' and had manhandled the two of them and even used plastic cans in the process by assaulting them cruelly until an S-lon pipe broke.
Subsequent to this incident this person was produced before courts; the said 'body builder' had gone to meet the Mayor of the UC in order to settle the dispute and when he was coming out of The UC had once again got involved in another dispute with sanitary health labourers. Since over 100 labourers had been running behind him and assaulting him, the Negombo Police had to intervene in rescuing his life.
It was Mr. Eranda Weerapura and Dinesh Chintaka who were the officers affiliated to the Health Division of the municipality of Negombo who were subjected to the assault initially. The municipality had launched committees to control the dengue menace spread across the whole of Negombo area. It was on the 22nd of September that an examination was carried out on houses on either side of Sri Wickrama Rajasingha Road in Negombo by the committee. These two officers had gone to a house in that area and on investigation had observed several plastic cans with larvas of mosquitoes.
When being questioned about it from the wife of the houseowner, the 'body builder'-husband of the wife had bumped into the scene all of a sudden. At that moment an argument had ensued between him and the said officers of the UC and finally the 'bodybuilder' had assaulted the two officers of the UC until they were admitted to hospital. Later, as a result of the complaint lodged at the Negombo Police the supposed suspect, one Stanley Fonseka was taken into custody and produced before courts and later released on bail.
All employees of the Health Division of Negombo UC who had though reported to work had later, on a strong decision had protested against this assault and had however not attended to their routine duties and thus even garbage collection stood at a standstill. Later they engaged in a massive protest in front of the UC.
In the process Stanley Fonseka who had been bailed out had arrived on his motor-bike on 23rd morning with the idea of asking for pardon from these officers at the municipality grounds of the UC.
The UC staff were prepared to accept his apologies; but they requested that he should ask for pardon at the UC grounds of the municipality.
But on this occasion Stanley had avoided the workers and when trying to go out from the UC premises, Health labourers of the UC had pursued him and had begun to beat him up. Later, officers of Negombo Police who took steps to rescue him and the motor-bike on which he came there was parked in the UC compound and he was escorted to his house under strong police security.
