Rebecca battles with cancer since 2007 -- Dr. Dissanayaka

Rebecca took treatment from us for 7 years .... Even radiotherapy treatment did not work-- Dr. Wasantha Dissanayaka

Deputy Director of Cancer Hospital, Dr. Wasantha Dissanayaka expressed his views to the media saying that the Late tele-actress Rebecca Nirmali who was taking treatment for 7 years passed away yesterday while undergoing treatment at Maharagama Cancer Hospital and when radiotherapy was unsuccessful, though she received chemotherapy
treatment, in the end she became feeble and ultimately breathed her last. He also made mention of the bodhi pooja pinkama carried out at the last weekend at the hospital premises on behalf of Rebecca by artistes.

Dr. Wasantha Dissanayaka spoke of Rebecca's demise in the following manner: "Our beloved actress Rebecca Nirmali had been taking treatment for cervix cancer from the year 2007. Recently the condition aggravated and she was warded at ward number 7.

We then gave her all possible treatment. Actually we gave radiation treatment. Even for that the condition did not respond. After that she was finally treated with chemotherapy which means a treatment which destroys cancer. But even after all this treatment, the condition did not seem to respond positively much.

During the past few days she was in great discomfort. But she was able to speak even till day-before-yesterday. At 2.30 in the night she closed her eyes forever .... so we are really sad. However her daughter was always present there. They knew with how much dedication this hospital staff worked on behalf of Rebecca.

In the same way, all artistes came and conducted a bodhi pooja too towards the weekend at this hospital premises itself. I express my thanks to those artistes and express our deepest sympathies to members of the family".

The body of Rebecca Nirmali who left us will be lying at Jayaratna Funeral Parlour today (13) and will be taken to Kalabhavana early tomorrow (14) morning for cremation at Borella Kanatta in the evening, as scheduled.
