Unexpected incident at Matale town

Girl's leg trapped inside concrete slab .... while walking on pavement

An uproar was seen in the town of Matale yesterday (Jan 17) because a young girl's leg had got trapped inside a concrete slab. She had been travelling on the pavement at that time.
The girl had then begun shouting in agony not being able to withdraw her leg from the concrete slab when some three-wheel drivers had rushed to the spot and had started a 'battle' trying to move the concrete slabs apart with the use of crowbars for about half-hour and finally managed to bring out the leg of the girl without damage.

What had happened was that the girl had been walking along Queen's Street around 9 in the morning yesterday towards the bus-halt near the clocktower when one of her legs had gone down an opening between the concrete slabs of the pavement and had thus got trapped there.

The efforts taken by the three-wheel drivers to remove the girl's leg trapped inside without any damage being caused is something that deserves appreciation. It is also understood that in the process of two crowbars being used in this rescue operation, the crowbars have gone out of shape. On this occasion police officers of Matale police station too had volunteered to assist in rescuing the girl concerned from this mishap.

The girl who faced this unfortunate and unexpected incident was afterwards admitted to the Matale Base hospital. The reason for this accident was that the concrete covers of the pavement had been laid in a somewhat irregular manner. It is reported that this type of dangerous places are to be seen elsewhere too in the town of Matale.
