A fire had broken out at a hall erected behind the Colombo Bandaranaike Memorial Hall on Saturday (Nov 30) afternoon and the fire brigade was summoned for assistance.
When the fire broke out there had been an exhibition in progress at the BMICH and a large crowd had been present. However, there were no casualties reported when this fire broke out at about 11 o'clock in the morning and the police it is reported had brought the fire under control.
The reason for the fire is still not known.
The fire had occured in the temporary hall which has been erected mostly for festivals and had been closed during the time the BMICH was closed. It was this hall that was utilised as the media centre during the time CHOGM was in progress. As a result of the fire, extensive damage was done to the building.
