At the time the aircraft was flying at an altitude of about 35,000 feet, a person who was highly drunk, wanting to go to to the toilet had approached an adjoining door of a cabin in the aircraft, mistaking it for the toilet and had thus attempted to open the door. At this moment, a female passenger who was on board with 2 of her children had observed the cricketer trying to open the door and having been gripped with fear had shouted. It is reported that passengers as well as service personnel had strived to move him away from there and that noticed that he had tried to open the door on about 3 occasions.
The aircraft personnel confirmed that the Sri Lankan cricket team travelled in this aircraft after their tour of the West Indies. The aircraft was on its way from St.Lucia in the West Indies to Gatwick Airport in London. The cricketer has for about 2 minutes trying to open the door and the rest of the passengers on board had been witnesses to this incident and got alarmed. In the process, the cricketer's team-mates too had shouted and tried to dissuade him and a great commotion had taken place. It is reported that while a massive disaster would have occured if he had managed to open the door at such an altitude of 35,000 feet with 229 passengers on board.
It was further revealed that the cricketer had been intoxicated not when he was inside the aircraft, but even 4 hours before the players boarded the flight.
The female passenger Francis who gave evidence in relation to the incident said that when she was in the company of her 2 children, a tall person who came near the door staggering was having a red-coloured headphone around his ears and she was able to identify him because of the cricketing logo of Sri Lanka seen on the blue-coloured polo shirt he was wearing. When she shouted at the moment he had tried to open the door and that several others who came to the scene to prevent him from opening the door too had had the same attire on them. She has mentioned this to the press as she was able to understand that this was the Sri Lankan cricket team.
Though it was confirmed that the person who came there was a player of the cricket team, authorities of British Airways later expressed that they were not prepared to reveal what his name is.
Even if a further investigation is not conducted in connection with this incident, because of the player's humiliating behaviour, news has already spread around about the discipine of the Sri Lankan cricket team by the international media.
