I am a criminal
Wait till I come out
- Vaas is supposed to have said
In the instance when Mr.Vaas Gunawardene, DIG Colombo North Western Province was taken into custody by the CID on the10th night in connection with the murder of ohamed Siyam, a businessman in Bambalapitiya, he had forcefully pushed back the chair he was sitting on and had said, "I knew that you'd do this to me .....but you'll can't keep me inside forever ..... Shani, I'm a criminal .... the day I come out ... see what I'll be doing to you'll" in a threatening tone and nature. This was mentioned by the CID yesterday (13). Mr.Shani
Abeysekera, ASP of the CID informed courts that this is a threatening statement aimed by the suspect DIG not only at officers who investigated this incident but a threat to their family members too.
VAAS IN HOSPITAL, SUFFERING FROM DIABETES
What Ajith Pathirana, Attorney-at-Law who appeared on behalf of Vaas Gunawardene expressed in courts was that Mr.Vaas Gunawardene was suddenly taken ill and admitted to hospital and that he is in Bed No.3 in Ward No.42 at the national Hospital. What was mentioned as his sickness was diabetes and hypertension.
The CID informed courts that information has been received that the suspect has committed a number of crimes and that it is necessary to find out all that information.
In the meantime, Ajith Pathirana, Attorney-at-Law stated that if by any chance Mr.Vaas Gunawardene was remanded, his life could be at stake because there are a number of prisoners who had been imprisoned because of him. Therefore, it was required that he be not remanded. In the meantime, a team of attorneys-at-law who appeared on behalf of the deceased party said that as an incident where Mr.Vaas Gunawardene had attempted suicide was reported, it is necessary to be vigilant on him and to remand him.
While the CID was allowed a period of 90 days to detain Vaas Gunawardene and question him, it was decided today by the Magistrate that a decision would be taken whether to remand him or not, taking into consideration his condition of health. Once again after a short while, courts conferred and Magistrate M.Sahabdeen mentioned that he decided that Vaas Gunawardene be remanded till the 25th.
