A commotion at Municipality grounds
Angered residents of Moratuwa
chases away Dpty.Mayor, suspect in murder of monk
The main suspect in the case where Sunandopananda Chief Incumbent Metigahatenne Wimalawansha of Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa was attacked and violently murdered by a group of people armed with weapons last February, was the Depty.Mayor Sujith Pushpakumara.
While he is still in remand, he managed to secure court permission at the last court hearing to attend municipal council meeting saying that he has to report to the municipality to maintain his official title. However, when the prison jailors escorted him in the prison bus on the occasion, both those of the ruling party and that of the opposition including monks and residents of the area created a commotion on the municipal grounds obstructing the way, protesting that he be taken away.
When a heated situation arose when the Dpty.Mayor arrived, the prison guards had to escort him back. When the prison bus arrived carrying the Dpty.Mayor and entered the municipal premises, monks and a large gathering who were present there prevented the Dpty.Mayor from alighting from the bus and engaged in a protest. Though there were some people favouring him gathered at the place, the prison bus had to be driven away with the suspect Dpty.Mayor under this restless situation. It was reported that under these circumstances the municipal meeting for today was not held at the scheduled time.
46 year old Chief Incumbent Sunandopananda Wimalawansha Thero who had been returning after lodging a complaint at the Moratuwa police station in respect of an issue relating to a land dispute was killed by some persons who had been hiding near the bodhiya and shrine room. The murder had been committed last February 2nd at about 9.30 in the night in front of the vihara bo-tree terrace.
There was information received that a provincial politician was connected to the murder, and on suspicion the Dpty.Mayor of Moratuwa was taken into custody the following day evening. The court case is still in progress.
