SUICIDE MAJOR’S STORY- UPDATES NO 2

TWO SIM CARDS MADE AND INSERTED INTO MAJOR'S MOBILE TO LISTEN TO ALL CONVERSATIONS

Because of an unnecessary involvement by exploding a hand bomb a Major in the army had committed suicide at Thihagoda in Matara inside his own double cab vehicle

The other day the case was heard in Matara courts where a lot of stories were heard from Major’s legal wife and his girl friend. The legal wife having come to know about his love affair had made a duplicate sim card with the same mobile number, had inserted into the Major’s mobile in order that she could hear all conversations the Major had with the girl friend. This had been confessed to courts by the legal wife when the case was heard. The girl friend had pretended to be a bachelor at all times from the start. This was revealed to the Matara Magistrate Miss Dulani Amerasinghe. The information revealed by both the legal wife and the girl friend are appended below published in a Sinhala newspaper article:
The Major’s wife gave her evidence first:

“ I got married in the year 2004.The marriage took place via a proposal. I have two children. The elder is the daughter who is seven years old while the younger is a son just three years old. We lived at the husband’s ancestral house. Until 22nd June 2011 we lived in unity and happily. My husband changed drastically since. During this period he hardly visited home. Once when he came home I without his knowledge I checked the numbers in his mobile phone. He had stored several numbers in his mobile. Within those numbers there was a number saved as ‘Menike’. I asked my husband who is ‘Menike’.He did not answer but kept quiet. I copied that number and dialled the number. It did not work. I kept on trying the number. On the 16th it answered.the person who answered said I am Ranjith’s wife. When I called again I was told that she was Puimi. She said she was 27 years old. She confessed to me that she is having a relationship with the Major. I reiterated to her that I am Major’s wife and we have two children. She then said as I am also a woman I shall stop it. When my husband went for work I called him several times, but he never answered to my calls.
About four months back my husband lodged a complaint in the Mawanella Police Station. This was produced to courts. The magistrate ordered to pay me Rs 8000/- as maintenance of the family. In January 2012 I filed a divorce case in the Mawanella District courts. Today was the day the case was to be heard. He worked in the Saliyapura Army camp. There were leasing arrears for his double cab vehicle. He wanted money from me to pay the arrears of leasing instalments. I pawned my jewellery at the People’s bank Mawanella and gave him Rs 90,000/-. I also withdrew money from my savings account anim. However when I called him he never answered my calls.
On the 17th he called me at 4.30 in the afternoon and told that his father is sick and that he will go to see him at Kurunegala and then come home. At 11.30 p.m he called me and told that he would be coming the following morning. On the 18th morning I called him. There was once more no answer. As usual I attended to my school work. The wife of another Major called me and told that Sampath Aiya has got into some problem. I said i am not aware. I called the Saliyapura army camp, from where I was told that he had lost his life. I took a short leave at 12.30 p.m. and went to the Mawanella Police station. After obtaining information I went to the Thihagoda Police station around 10.30 p.m. I met the OIC and afterwards proceeded to the Matara Hospital. I identified the body as my husband’s in front of the Judicial Medical Officer. I told that it was not necessary for him to commit suicide as he lived happily with the children. Anyway I accept the report of his death. “

Puimi Watsala Udayangani (17) giving her evidence had said this:

“I am studying for my Advanced levels and go for classes. I study at Kamburupitiya Maha Vidyalaya. I have a younger sister and a younger brother together with my parents with whom I live. My father is a retired Army officer. He retired about 1 ½ years back. At home there are two mobile phones. One is used by my father and the other by mother. When I go for classes I take and use my mother’s mobile. The dead Army officer once had called my phone. That was on the 20th June 2011.The number was 077.........The same day evening he called me from the same phone. I asked who is that person calling?.He said I am working as a Major in the army. I am Officer Sampath.
He asked me whether I am working. I said I am still attending tuition classes to sit for o/levels. Then he continued to call me when I give him a “missed” call. My mother told him that I am still studying and is a student and you need not bother about her. After two days my mother called him. He said he is from Kurunegala and that he has only a brother and a sister and that he is not married.
He told me in March 2012 that he will come to meet my mother and father. Accordingly he visited us. He came to Matara and met us along the beach road near the children’s park. He had come by bus. He spoke to for about 45 minutes. He told me to study for any length of time. My father brought and gave him a bottle of soft drink. At 11.45 a.m. Sampath said he has to report for work, he left. He said he intends buying a vehicle and that he will come soon in it to go to Kataragama to make a vow.
On the 2nd of May he came in a brand new cab vehicle and met us near the Kamburupitiya Pola. I went near the vehicle with father, mother and sister. I need to go to kataragama to fulfil a vow with all of you. My mother asked why didn’t your mother and sister did not come. Sampath told they were both sick. My mother told Sampath that it is not all nice go with us. He told he somehow needs to go as it is not nice go back. Then we agreed. I sat in the front seat while my father, mother and brother sat on the rear seat. We arrived at Kataragama around 7.30 p.m. After the ‘poojawa’ Sampath booked two rooms in the ‘Dutugemunu’ Rest. My mother, father and I occupied one room while the other room was occupied by my brother and Sampath.
The following day we drove through Nuwara Eliya where we visited two flower gardens. We had lunch in a hotel and stayed the night at one of Sampath’s friend’s houses. At that place they all consumed liquor.
The following day our ‘Punchi’ in Ratnapura was to go Dambadiva. That night we stayed at Hanwella. The following day we went to see the Dehiwala Zoological gardens. We were then coming back to Matara the cab vehicle met with an accident with a lorry at around 3 p.m. The vehicle was brought to our house. When my father tried to wash the vehicle by mistake a front lamp was also damaged. The insurance personnel came to see the damages to the vehicle. After repairs the vehicle was brought to our kamburupitiya home. We took many photographs during the trip from Sampath’s camera. My brother was the person who took the photographs.
My birthday was on the 29th of July.2012.Sampath had brought along  a cake with the number 18 on it. We cut the cake and we all eat it. Sampath had brought me a laptop as my birthday gift. Then Sampath went away and we did not meet thereafter until the 18th of this month.
On the 18thmorning at 5.30 in the morning Sampath called us and told us that there is a matter to be resolved. He wanted us to be in Matara at 9 o’clock. As we wanted to purchase some electrical goods also we came in a three wheeler at 9.20 a.m. At 9.30 a.m Sampath came in his cab vehicle to Mapalane junction. Sampath wanted us to get into the cab vehicle. He took us to Thihagoda and stopped along the Hakmana main road and stopped at a quiet place. My father brought and gave Sampath a soft drink which he did not take. I was seated in the front seat. After a while I got off the vehicle and so did my father and mother. Sampath also got off the vehicle and took them to a side and spoke about something. He gave a black bag to my father taken from the cab. Sampath worshipped my mother and father and had wanted them to pardon him. We then went off. After we were hardy 10m metres away we heard a huge noise like that of an explosion coming out from a transformer. My mother and father screamed loud. We tried to stop passing vehicles by signalling to them but no one stopped. The cab vehicle was in flames.
In a few minutes a Police Vehicle from the Thihagoda arrived. One Miss who was passing by had told that a person is getting burnt inside the cab vehicle and is perhaps dead.”
