I was never aware of such a water bottle
- Sarana Gunawardena:
At the time of the incident when the water bottle thrown at the Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe which fell near his legs and the water to some extent drenched the President while making the budget speech 2011, the Gampaha District M.P Sarana Gunawardena who is accused for the incident had said that at the time of this incident he was not among the Government M.P’s, but was in the upper storey of the Parliament complex.
He had said that the verdict given by the Speaker in suspending him is a wrong one and went on to reiterate and say that at the time of the incident he was on the upper floor of the Parliament complex.
The news about banning him from Parliament was made known to him via a ‘sms’, M.P. Sarana Gunawardena had confessed. The views he had aired about this incident to a newspaper is as follows.
“At the time the incident took place I was on the upper floor of the Parliament complex. The clash together with the incident was shown in the television and newspapers. My presence was not seen anywhere. As far as I know I vouch that I was not a party to this incident. I could only honestly say I am innocent.”
However very unfortunately, in the video when replayed my picture had emerged. However after those who investigated the video had revealed that I was the suspect and accordingly the Speaker had taken the decision to suspend me according to the ethics that prevail in regard to the behaviour of M.P.’s within the Parliament. This video was of course not shown to the media.
