A key defendant, who was convicted and sentenced to prison in a case where a police officer who went to enforce the law was brutally assaulted, blinded in one eye, had eleven teeth broken, and was attempted to be murdered, has now absconded from court. The person currently in hiding is R., who served as the former chairman of the Kobeigane Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society.

A. Sisira Kumara Ramanayake. An open warrant has now been issued by Wayamba Provincial High Court Judge Tikiri Jayathilaka, ordering the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Nikaweratiya Division to immediately arrest him and produce him before the court.

This brutal attack took place many years ago, specifically on March 03, 2006. Police Inspector Pradeep Karunadhira, who was then the OIC of Rasnayakapura Police, went to raid an illegal sand mining operation that was taking place in Deduru Oya. When he attempted to arrest the traffickers involved in the operation, they brutally assaulted the OIC.

The nature of the assault was so severe that Police Inspector Pradeep Karunadhira lost eleven teeth and one eye was completely blinded. It is also noteworthy that the defendants involved in this crime, which was aimed at killing him, were sentenced by law only many years after the incident.

Following a lengthy trial, Sisira Kumara Ramanayake, the former chairman of the Kobeigane Cooperative Society, who is currently absconding from court, was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by Wayamba Provincial High Court Judge Tikiri Jayathilaka. Additionally, four individuals from the sixth to the ninth defendants in this case were sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment each, and the remaining defendants were sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment each.

Among those sentenced to four and two years of imprisonment are A. Mahinda Kumarasiri, who was then the former Vice Chairman of the Kobeigane Pradeshiya Sabha. K.P. Samansiri, N.M. Buddhika Prasad, K.A. Nilantha Saman Kumara, Priyantha Kumara, L. Indika Nuwan Sampath, P.M. Nimal Siriwardhana, R.M. Ranjan Ramanayake, R.M. Jayalath Pradeep Kumara, A.L. Ramanayake, S.M. Sunil Priyantha, L. Lalith Premakumara, S.A. Nilantha Samaratunga, L. Ajantha Samaraweera, S.A. Nilantha Samaraweera, S.A. Lakshman, A. Asanka Indrajith, and Warnakulasuriya Anil Krishantha are the other defendants who received such sentences.

Although justice has been served for this brutal crime after many years, the main defendant, the former cooperative chairman who was sentenced to imprisonment, is still evading the law and hiding. However, with the latest open warrant issued by the Wayamba Provincial High Court, the responsibility of bringing him before the law now rests with the Senior Superintendent of Police of Nikaweratiya and other police officers.
