Meghan Markle's father, 82-year-old Thomas Wayne Markle, the Duchess of Sussex who has garnered significant global attention, has been arrested by agents of the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Florida on charges of possessing child abuse material. The arrest took place on the morning of Friday, November 6, 2026, at 'Maravida' adult and dementia care home in Lakeland, near Tampa.
He was receiving residential treatment there due to health issues and has been confined to a wheelchair after his left leg was amputated. Media reports and visuals confirm that he was brought out in a wheelchair, handcuffed, and an ambulance was also called to the scene.
According to a federal criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, he has been officially charged with possession of child pornography. If these charges are proven, he could face a maximum federal prison sentence of 20 years.
Commenting on this, Bill Easley, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, stated that FBI special agents searched two storage units belonging to Markle in the Los Angeles area based on a court warrant. Approximately 78 items were found, including photographs, negative films, and books suspected of containing child abuse material. According to an affidavit, the attorney explained that three of these photographs depicted Markle and underage victims. He further added, "These charges are very serious and shocking. We expect to prosecute Markle to the fullest extent of federal law."
The investigation began with media reports published after October 22, 2026. Meghan's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., aged around 60, stated that while examining boxes in his father's old house in Cebu, Philippines, he discovered hundreds or thousands of child sexual abuse images among ordinary family memorabilia. In July 2026, he reported this to the Philippine police, the FBI, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He emphasized that he was deeply shocked by the incident and would no longer provide any support to his father unless called as a witness.
Philippine authorities and the country's Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed that they seized a laptop and several other materials from the house. It is reported that there are over 7,000 photos and at least one video involving Asian, Latin, and European children aged around 10-11. Remulla, who described these images as the most disgusting he had ever seen, stated that Thomas Markle Jr. is not a suspect in this investigation but is considered an important person related to the inquiry. Currently, the Philippine police are working jointly with American authorities. Additionally, information regarding a storage unit near Rosarito, Mexico, one of his former residences, has also been reported.
After his left leg had to be suddenly amputated due to a stroke and a blood clot, Markle left the Philippines in early 2026 and returned to the United States for treatment. Markle repeatedly denies all charges against him, calling them 'sick lies.' While he admits to having paid for sex with adult women in the Philippines, he states that he has no involvement with minors and that the images in question are not his or have been altered.
Thomas Markle, a former television lighting and photography director, separated from Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, when Meghan was a child. The relationship between father and daughter had deteriorated since Meghan and Prince Harry's wedding on May 19, 2018, at Windsor Castle.
Following these initial reports, Meghan Markle issued a statement in late October 2026, saying she was deeply shocked by the allegations. She revealed that in 2018, a letter containing disturbing allegations about her father had been received by London police, and this also influenced her decision to keep him away from her children, Archie and Lilibet. She stated that her children's safety is a priority and that she expects justice to be served. However, her representative declined to comment further on the arrest. Nevertheless, Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle, has supported their father and questioned these charges.
Thomas Wayne Markle is scheduled to appear in Tampa court. In this ongoing legal process, he is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
