Hakeem Jeffries is poised to make history by becoming the first Black Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, rewriting its 237-year history. This historic turning point comes as the Democratic Party reasserted its control of the House in the midterm elections held on November 3.

It is predicted that Democrats will win between 220 and 244 seats, exceeding the 218 seats required for a majority in the House, thus ending four years of Republican rule under Speaker Mike Johnson. With Democrats also holding power in the Senate, Chuck Schumer is set to be reappointed as Majority Leader, creating a divided government structure for the final two years of President Donald Trump's term.

Speaking at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's election night event in Washington, Jeffries declared that the great American comeback begins now. He strongly criticized the severe Medicaid cuts implemented by laws passed on July 4, 2025, and pledged to reverse those cuts, extend 'Affordable Care Act' benefits, and reassert Congress's powers regarding tariffs. He also emphasized that he would address Trump's Iran policies and conduct investigations to hold fraudsters accountable.

Jeffries, 56, has served as the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives since January 2023. He was also the first Black person to be elected to party leadership in a chamber of the U.S. Congress. He is expected to be elected Speaker when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027. This position, confirmed by the Constitution, is second in the line of presidential succession after Vice President J.D. Vance. The official nomination of the candidate is expected at a closed-door meeting of Democratic members in late November, and no strong challengers are anticipated against him.

Hakeem Sekou Jeffries was born on August 4, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was Laneda Jeffries, a social worker, and his father was Marland Jeffries, a drug prevention counselor. Raised in Crown Heights, he attended Midwood High School and earned an honors degree in Political Science from Binghamton University and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University. Subsequently, in 1997, he obtained a Juris Doctor degree with distinction from New York University School of Law. He then served under a federal judge and worked as a legal counsel for the Paul, Weiss law firm and for Viacom and CBS.

Jeffries represented the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012. In 2012, he was elected to Congress from New York's Eighth District, which covers areas including Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, East New York, Canarsie, and Coney Island. In 2026, he won his seat again with approximately 74.5% of the vote. He served as the Chief Whip and Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. Following Nancy Pelosi's departure, he was unanimously elected as the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives in November 2022. Jeffries, who also served as a manager during Donald Trump's first impeachment trial, is known for his calm speaking style, which blends biblical texts and hip-hop influences. Acknowledging the influence of Brooklyn culture, he previously performed rap under the name 'Kid Fresh'. Leonard Jeffries, a Black nationalist scholar, is his uncle. He is married to social worker Kennisandra Arciniegas and is a father of two sons.

Moving forward, he will face the challenge of balancing the party's moderates with progressive new members in leading the House. This includes factions represented by Democratic Socialists like Dariyalisa Avila Chevalier, who have not yet agreed to full support. Amidst demands for universal healthcare, Israel policy, and more stringent actions, his approach has been to prioritize everyday issues such as economic affordability, expanding Medicaid eligibility, raising the minimum wage, Supreme Court ethics, regulating artificial intelligence, and taxing the wealthy. Discussions regarding term limits for committee chairs are also ongoing.

Catherine Clark is expected to remain as the Democratic Majority Leader, and Pete Aguilar as the Majority Whip. On the Republican side, now in the minority, Mike Johnson has expressed a desire to remain in leadership, and there is potential for a leadership contest involving Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan.

The Democratic majority will hold full power over the new legislative agenda, committee powers, subpoena authority, and the investigation of the Trump administration and his family's businesses. However, given the President's veto power, bipartisan agreement will be necessary to pass essential bills such as those concerning the debt ceiling and funding. Jeffries has stated that the public, having rejected extremism and corruption, is demanding solutions to everyday cost-of-living issues, and this shift in power will be a crucial turning point determining the political trajectory of Trump's final two years in office.
