The mysterious death of Ishara Harsha Kumara, a twenty-nine-year-old father of one, is currently moving in two directions. Two main narratives have now emerged regarding the death of this young man, who was arrested on suspicion of a drug charge while in the custody of Homagama Police.

One of these is the serious revelation made by the other suspect, who was in the cell and witnessed the incident, to the investigators. The other is the information about a road accident and hospitalization contained in the official statement issued by the Sri Lanka Police.

Officers from the Western Province South District Crime Division (Nugegoda Criminal Investigation Division) investigating Ishara's mysterious death visited the prison on the 29th with the aim of recording crucial testimony. They had also obtained a special order from the Magistrate's Court for this purpose. Their objective was to obtain a statement from the other suspect who was arrested along with Ishara on the night of October 24, 2026, and detained in the Homagama Police cell. This key witness, currently held in prison, made a lengthy statement before the investigators, leveling a serious accusation. He stated that police officers severely assaulted Ishara Harsha Kumara and then brought him to the cell. Furthermore, he revealed during police questioning that Ishara was in a critical condition, unable even to speak, when he was brought to the cell.

However, in parallel with this accusation, the official statement issued by the Sri Lanka Police has reported another angle related to the incident to the court. According to police investigations, the deceased suspect was involved in a road accident on October 24. Subsequently, he was admitted to Homagama Hospital at 1:05 PM on that day for treatment under bed head ticket number 65644/2026. However, investigating officers have reported to the court that he unauthorizedly left the hospital around 5:55 PM on the same day. According to the police statement, the suspect died after being arrested by the police and admitted to the hospital. However, other reports state that he died mysteriously inside the cell.

Amidst this clear contradiction between the witness's statement and the official police report, severe measures have already been taken against several officers of the Homagama Police. The former Sub-Inspector who served as the OIC of the Crime Division of Homagama Police at the time of the incident was arrested on October 28. The following day, the 29th, after being produced before the Homagama Magistrate's Court, the court ordered his remand until November 12 for an identification parade. In addition, the Chief Inspector of Homagama Police Headquarters has been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty, and another Sub-Inspector and a Police Sergeant accused in this incident have also been suspended.

This full investigation, led by the Western Province South District Crime Division as per the Inspector General of Police's order, has now reached a broad stage. Statements have already been recorded from eight civilians and nine police officers regarding the mysterious death. A senior police officer has confirmed that further investigations will be conducted based on the lengthy testimony obtained from the suspect currently in prison. Police sources further state that several more police officers are expected to be arrested as a result of these investigations.

A serious contradiction that needs to be resolved has now emerged regarding the loss of a father of one. While the police reported to the court about a road accident that led to hospitalization and an unauthorized departure from the hospital, an eyewitness states that he was beaten to the extent that he couldn't even speak when brought to the cell. Through the upcoming identification parade and ongoing investigations, the true nature of Ishara's death will be determined before the law, amidst these two conflicting narratives.
