Mr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, husband of former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake and former Chairman of the National Savings Bank (NSB), has been arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
This is in connection with a comprehensive investigation being conducted by the Bribery Commission into the 'Siriliya Saviya' account related to Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and financial irregularities within that organization.
Mr. Kariyawasam's arrest occurred against the backdrop of Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa also being arrested this morning (07) in connection with this investigation.
Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa was arrested at her residence on Poorwarama Road, Kirulapana. The Bribery Commission stated that she was arrested after recording her statements for nearly two hours.
The arrest of Mr. Kariyawasam, a former chairman of the National Savings Bank, in connection with this ongoing investigation concerning the former First Lady, is considered an indication that the inquiry is further expanding. However, further details regarding the specific reasons for his arrest have not yet been reported.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption is conducting further investigations into the financial activities related to the 'Siriliya Saviya' account.
