The incident of removing the robes of the imprisoned Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero and dressing him in a prisoner's uniform has now led to strong political and religious controversy. Regarding this, the Chairman of the United National Party, Mr. Vajira Abeywardena, stating the party's official stance, says that the Ministry of Justice should have sought the opinions of the Mahanayaka Theros before making such a decision.

He stated this today (08) at a press conference held at the UNP political office located on Flower Road, Colombo. He also emphasized that the next step should have been decided only after receiving advice from the Mahanayaka Theros.

According to Mr. Abeywardena, this decision poses a challenge to Buddhism as well as to religious freedom in the country. In his view, this is a violation of both Article 9 of the Constitution, which gives Buddhism the foremost place, and Article 10, which affirms freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.

Recalling that the case against Ven. Gnanasara Thero was filed during the good governance government, the UNP Chairman pointed out that the Mahanayaka Theros at the time had sent a letter to the then President requesting a pardon for him, and subsequently, the then government had acted to grant the pardon.

"If freedom was granted once, respecting the request of the Mahanayaka Theros, how can it be changed now?" he questioned. He also accused that although actions should be taken according to the law, the relevant laws are not being properly implemented at present.

It is Mr. Abeywardena's position that this cannot be considered an ordinary court case, as a request made by the Mahanayaka Theros of the country is involved. He also stated that the government even had the opportunity to resolve this issue through other means by discussing it with Parliament.

The UNP Chairman further stated that a detailed statement, including the legal background regarding this matter, is expected to be made by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe after his return to the island.
