A 39-year-old Sri Lankan man, who pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault against a woman and two girls on public transport in England, has been sentenced to fourteen months (one year and two months) in prison by the Manchester Crown Court. The individual sentenced is Nisan Fernando Kurukulasuriya, who came to Scotland, UK, four years ago (in 2022) to work as a fisherman and later lived in the Altrincham area.
On April 20th, he severely sexually assaulted a woman on a train traveling from Stoke to Manchester. This individual sat next to the woman, who was talking on the phone with her children, and assaulted her by touching her body. Even when she pushed him away, he repeated the act. It was revealed in court that he then indecently exposed his sexual organs in front of her, and fled the scene when the woman screamed. However, following the victim's report to train staff, he was arrested by the British Transport Police at Manchester Piccadilly station.
Police investigations confirmed that prior to this train incident, specifically on October 20th last year, he had also sexually assaulted two teenage girls, aged 16 and 17, on a bus operating in the Tameside area. He first assaulted the 17-year-old girl by touching her leg, and then moved closer to the 16-year-old girl and assaulted her in the same manner. A photograph taken by one of the girls as he was getting off the bus, combined with DNA samples obtained after the April train incident, definitively identified him as the suspect involved in the bus incident as well.
In addition to the prison sentence handed down by the court, Kurukulasuriya has also been issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order with strict conditions, effective for a period of ten years. Accordingly, he is completely prohibited from sitting next to any unfamiliar woman when using public transport, and from associating with any girl under the age of 18 without adult supervision. Furthermore, the court has ordered that his name be added to the UK's Sex Offenders Register for the next ten years.
