As the King of Britain arrived in Guyana from the Bahamas yesterday on a special Royal Air Force plane, marking the second phase of his Caribbean tour, he received challenging news about his popularity. Since his coronation as King, his popularity has plummeted to an unprecedented low, decreasing by four points in the past few weeks alone compared to July.

Although 58 percent of Britons still hold a positive view of the King, a recently published work has directly influenced the strong division of public opinion. This highly critical royal memoir, authored by Earl Spencer, presents a number of explosive allegations regarding the King's alleged reaction to the death of his sister, Princess Diana. However, Buckingham Palace has unprecedentedly rejected these memoirs.

Despite this situation, the Prince and Princess of Wales continue to lead as the most popular royals among the British public, recording a high percentage of 74 percent. In stark contrast, public opinion towards Harry and Meghan appears to have become even more negative since their move away from California. According to a YouGov poll of 2,000 adults, the Duchess of Sussex's net favorability rating has dropped to minus 48, which is considered her lowest recorded value.

Against this backdrop, the King arrived at Cheddi Jagan Airport in Guyana for a two-day royal tour, where he was warmly welcomed by Guyana's President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. The King also observed a guard of honor there. This visit marks 60 years of relations between Guyana, Britain's largest Caribbean trading partner, and Britain. Ambassador Evan Evelyn, High Commissioner Joseph Fisher, and British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who was present for discussions, were also scheduled to join the King's reception.

Historically, President Ali has been a strong voice demanding compensation from Britain for slavery, yet he maintains a very close relationship with the King. Their friendly embrace upon the King's arrival once again demonstrated this friendship. It is reported that the President does not intend to publicly raise the issue of compensation during this visit, but instead hopes to focus on the present and future of the two countries. The King and the President, who have met on six previous occasions, share a very close relationship, especially in their work for the environment.
