The latest role of Mahinda Kahandagama, the former Municipal Councillor of the Colombo Municipal Council, who was often discussed in political circles as well as in street clashes, is currently being revealed before the law. This is in connection with a large-scale drug trafficking operation said to have been carried out in Colombo and several surrounding areas, maintaining connections with the underworld.
Kahandagama was arrested during a special operation carried out by the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau the day before yesterday (05) night at a restaurant or club located in the Nugegoda area. This operation was conducted under the full supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ranmal Kodithuwakku, Deputy Inspector General of Police Chandana Kodithuwakku, and Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa.
According to information revealed by police investigations, he has been operating this large-scale drug trafficking for a long time in collaboration with an underworld leader named Ibbagewatte Sujee. However, investigations have also revealed that Kahandagama had received severe death threats from Kosgoda Sujee for failing to pay for a stock of 'ice' drugs worth over one crore rupees. The police have also found several audio recordings containing these death threats made by Kosgoda Sujee against him.
At the time of Kahandagama's arrest, another person was with him, who is a resident of the Mahawa area. Reportedly, there is a murder charge against him, and the related case is currently being heard in the Kurunegala court.
According to the police, Kahandagama, an individual accused of various charges, played various roles in Colombo politics. He served as the president of the Street Vendors' Association and was also elected as a Municipal Councillor of the Colombo Municipal Council, representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna for a period. He worked as a close supporter of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for some time, and later switched parties to join the battle to ensure the victory of the United National Party.
The most controversial incident in his political career was reported with the attack on the 'Aragalaya' (protest) held at Galle Face Green recently. He was accused of being a leading figure in the attack on the protest, and subsequently, a video of him being attacked by a group and crawling on the street in his underwear was circulated on social media recently.
Mahinda Kahandagama and other suspects, who are once again caught in the net of the law on drug charges, have now been produced before the Nugegoda court. Accordingly, the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau has obtained a 07-day detention order for them, and the suspect is being further extensively questioned regarding this trafficking operation.
