lawyer-sudath-who-fabricated-false-stories-that-the-people-who-wrote-the-vaskaviya-were-brought-to-the-police-is-being-questioned

The Sri Lanka Police has confirmed that the incident related to a 'was kaviya' (curse poem), which caused a strong controversy on social media in recent days, is a completely fabricated falsehood. The Central Criminal Investigation Department recorded a statement from the relevant lawyer the day before yesterday (26) regarding the dissemination of that false statement, which misleads the public.

This incident came to light when a video containing a statement by lawyer Sudath Wickramarathne rapidly spread across social media. In the video, he claimed that a young client of his was summoned to the Dematagoda Police and had a statement recorded concerning a 'was kaviya' that circulated on social media on or around October 22nd.

Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya, who focused on that statement, immediately ordered the Central Criminal Investigation Department to conduct an investigation into the matter. Accordingly, steps were taken to immediately call for a report from the Dematagoda Police Station. Upon inquiries made from officers on duty on the relevant day and examination of official documents, the OIC of Dematagoda Police confirmed that no such statement had been recorded from any individual. Furthermore, it was officially reported that no complaint regarding a 'was kaviya' had been received by the Dematagoda Police.

Lawyer Sudath Wickramarathne, who is accused of presenting false information in this manner, is the General Secretary of the Samagi Lawyers' Federation, and it is reported that he also serves as an active political member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, centered in the Colombo District. He is a figure who has been discussed in the media through several recent incidents.

Regarding the publication of this false statement on social media with the intention of misleading the public, officers of the Central Criminal Investigation Department are currently conducting further investigations under the instructions of its Director, Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa.
