Suspect who robbed Faizer Mustapha's sister's Wellawatte house arrested in 5 days

Wellawatta Police have succeeded in arresting two individuals, including the main suspect, within a short period of five days, after they entered a two-story house belonging to a lawyer residing in the Wellawatta area of Colombo and stole a safe containing gold jewelry worth nearly two crore rupees.

This theft occurred at the residence of lawyer Faisa Marikkar, who is a sister of Member of Parliament Faiszer Musthapha, located in Kavirathna Place, Wellawatta. The safe, which contained a stock of gold items weighing over thirty-nine and a half pounds, was kept inside a wardrobe in an upstairs room of her house, and a complaint regarding this was lodged with the police on the 24th.

During extensive investigations carried out using nearby CCTV footage related to the incident, officers were able to identify the suspect carrying the safe, covered with a bedsheet, on his shoulder. Accordingly, officers from the Criminal Investigation Division, acting on this information, arrested the main suspect and a trishaw driver who assisted him, while they were hiding in a house on Kalyani Road, Wellawatta.

The individual arrested is a registered criminal known as "Wellawatte Ubaya," and police have confirmed that he was imprisoned for numerous other criminal charges and was released on bail approximately two weeks ago. Approximately thirty pounds of the stolen gold items and 13,180 milligrams of heroin were taken into police custody from his possession.

During interrogations, it was revealed that the suspect committed the theft by climbing the back wall of the house to the upper floor and entering through an open door. Afterward, he took the safe to a friend's house in the Boralesgamuwa Werahera area and broke it open, pawned a portion of the gold items at a shop in the same area and sold another portion to an individual in the Atulugama area of Bandaragama, and used the money to consume drugs.

Additionally, investigations further revealed that the suspect purchased clothes with the money, and also deposited one hundred and forty-five thousand rupees into his personal bank account. The two arrested suspects are scheduled to be produced before the court.
