A 27-year-old father has been arrested by the Balangoda, Pinnawala police for assaulting his two children, threatening to kill them if his wife, who works as a domestic helper in Kuwait, Middle East, did not send money, and video recording and sending these scenes.
The suspect, Lalith Kumar, a resident of Walawwe Kotasa, Ganga Addarapara, Pinnawala, Balangoda, previously worked as a plantation laborer and later stayed at home looking after his seven-year-old daughter and four-year-old son. The suspect father video recorded himself assaulting the children on his mobile phone and sent it to his wife working in Kuwait, threatening to kill the children if she did not send money.
The wife, who released the relevant video footage sent by her husband to social media, also lodged a complaint with the Colombo Children and Women's Bureau regarding the incident. After this complaint was forwarded to the Balangoda Pinnawala Police, investigations led by the Acting OIC of Pinnawala Police, Mr. T. M. Madurasinghe, resulted in the arrest of the suspect father.
The two assaulted children have been admitted to Balangoda Base Hospital for further examination and are scheduled to be examined by a judicial medical officer. After the arrested suspect was produced before the Balangoda Magistrate's Court, Balangoda Magistrate Ms. Hagala Dilrukshi Wickramasinghe ordered him to be remanded until the 2nd of next month. Giving a statement to the police, the suspect stated that he sent such videos with the intention of making his wife in Kuwait respond to his phone calls, as she was not responding properly, and that he did not assault the children to demand money.
Meanwhile, Mr. Samin Chaminda, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Manager of the Foreign Employment Bureau, stated that mothers with children over two years of age have the opportunity to go abroad with the father's permission, and that their bureau is also looking into further details regarding this incident.
