Chaminda Wijesiri, who was jailed for one and a half years, has been granted bail and gone home.

The Badulla High Court has ordered the release of Badulla District Member of Parliament Chaminda Wijesiri on conditional bail, in connection with the one-and-a-half-year prison sentence imposed on him.

The Attorney General had filed a case against him under the charges of unlawfully obstructing the duties of two police officers, assaulting and injuring them, and making death threats near the roundabout in Bandarawela town on or around February 10, 2019. He was sentenced to this prison term on July 28 last year due to being found guilty of these charges, and by the time he was released on bail, the MP had been imprisoned for twenty-seven days.

Badulla High Court Judge Jeyaram Trotsky issued this bail order, according to which the MP was ordered to be released on a cash bail of fifty thousand rupees and two personal sureties of ten lakhs rupees each. In addition, a travel ban has been imposed, prohibiting him from traveling abroad without prior court permission after posting bail.

His wife, Mrs. Jayaweera Mudiyanselage Shanika, through lawyer Malinda Jayasinghe, had submitted facts to the court requesting that the prison sentence imposed on the MP be set aside and he be acquitted, and that he be granted bail until the relevant appeal is concluded. After considering the facts in the petition filed naming the Attorney General as the respondent, the High Court judge announced the decision to grant bail to the defendant.
