150 people hospitalized in Jaffna after laser beams hit their eyes

Over 150 people have been hospitalized due to eye-related allergies following an unfortunate incident that occurred during a festival held at the Murugamoorthy Kovil in the Bandaratarippu area of Jaffna. It is reported that the high-powered laser beams used and the excessive smoke emitted from firecrackers lit during this festival, held on the 20th, were the main causes of this condition.

Those affected by the excessive smoke and powerful laser light at the festival grounds have experienced eye irritation as well as vision impairment. Due to this condition, 120 of those affected by allergies are receiving treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while another 46 have been admitted to Tellippalai Hospital. It is reported that 60 of those hospitalized are women and young children.

As new patients continue to be reported, hospital sources state that the number of hospitalizations may further increase in the future.

Commenting on this matter, Dr. Sathyamurthi, Director of Jaffna Teaching Hospital, stated that the hospital staff is ready to provide necessary treatment to patients without any hindrance. Therefore, he further urged the public to get hospitalized immediately without delay if they experience any eye-related allergies or discomfort.
