The Health Division of the Kurunegala Municipal Council has decided to take legal action against a well-known hotel operating in Kurunegala city, an establishment that supplies beverages highly popular among the youth, and several other individuals. This decision stems from an incident involving the unauthorized dumping of a large quantity of waste near the road leading to the Kurunegala Gettuwana Fisheries Corporation.
This unauthorized waste dumping occurred in the area under the expressway flyover, located on the bypass road that runs from Gettuwana Junction on the Kurunegala-Kandy road, through the Fisheries Corporation, to Muttettugala on the Dambulla road. Following a complaint made by Mr. Eranda Madugoda, the Municipal Councillor representing the Gettuwana division for the Sri Lanka People's Party (SLPP), and local residents, two Public Health Inspectors visited the site and conducted investigations.
It was observed that a large amount of waste, including empty plastic beverage bottles, plastic cups, as well as rotten meat and various food items, had been dumped there. Health officials point out that due to these decaying food items, a strong stench permeates the entire area, and there is a high risk of fly breeding and dengue mosquito breeding.
During searches conducted by Public Health Inspectors Messrs. Jayampathi and Manoj Jayatissa, bills and various documents found in the pile of waste confirmed that these belonged to the aforementioned hotel and the popular beverage outlet. Health authorities were also able to identify the owners of other waste items based on stationery found there.
Officials immediately took action regarding this matter, summoning the manager of the relevant hotel to the site, sternly admonishing him, and informing him that legal action would be filed. Although the manager stated that he had properly handed over the establishment's waste to the municipal council workers, the health inspectors rejected this statement and proceeded to take legal action. At that moment, local residents gathered there also expressed their protest to the hotel manager, demanding that the waste be removed immediately.
Commenting on this, Municipal Councillor Eranda Madugoda emphasized that the illegal dumping of waste on this road has become a serious environmental problem. He stated that on several previous occasions, individuals who dumped waste in this manner were apprehended, and added that since the Gettuwana division has already been identified as a dengue risk zone, the Kurunegala Municipal Council should take maximum legal action against such individuals.
