The Criminal Investigation Department has rejected a request made by Mr. Suresh Sale's wife to allow him to meet his lawyer daily while he is receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital under police custody.
Mrs. Sale Bandusena made this request, pointing out that Mr. Sale's health condition, who is currently hospitalized due to engaging in a hunger strike while in detention, is deteriorating due to his refusal of food and drink. She had requested that lawyer Asitha Siriwardena be allowed to meet her husband on all five weekdays. In response, the Criminal Investigation Department's Director, Senior Superintendent of Police G.S. Abeysekera, rejected the said request through a letter he sent.
The Director, through his letter, pointed out that since the suspect is currently receiving medical treatment and is not involved in investigative activities, there is no need for legal advice at this time. Furthermore, the Senior Superintendent of Police informed that constant meetings with the lawyer could deprive him of the essential mental rest as a patient, which would not be beneficial to his health. Accordingly, it was further emphasized that, as per existing court orders, the lawyer can only meet the suspect on Wednesdays of every week.
However, the Criminal Investigation Department states that during the period Mr. Suresh Sale is hospitalized, his wife, daughter, and son have already been provided with the necessary facilities to visit him daily at the hospital to inquire about his well-being. The letter clarified that considering these facts and the suspect's health condition, the lawyer cannot be allowed daily access to the hospital.
