Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harsha Nanayakkara, states that even if the opposition snatches or swallows the mace in Parliament, the speed of hearing cases and delivering judgments within the current judicial system will not be hindered in any way. Participating in a parliamentary debate yesterday (23), the Minister emphasized that behind the opposition's tumultuous behavior is not a genuine desire to uphold the rule of law, but merely intense fear and apprehension regarding the cases being heard against them.
The Minister pointed out that compared to previous years, both investigative activities and the speed of hearing cases have significantly increased under the current administration, adding that the public and members of the opposition are well aware of the final outcomes and impending court decisions. He also stated that the opposition, which continues to represent an unseemly political culture unchanged for many years, attempts to carry away the mace while leveling various baseless accusations in Parliament, solely with the narrow objective of somehow halting the legal actions against them.
The Minister acknowledged that there is an ongoing discussion regarding the extension of the retirement age for judges, and stated that the government is also paying attention to the alternative ideas and facts presented against it.
He affirmed that the current government is properly fulfilling its responsibility as a democratic government to listen carefully to the views of all parties and arrive at the most suitable decision. Minister Nanayakkara, stating that the government constantly respects the mandate given by the public, pointed out that the opposition is making baseless and absurd statements, living in imaginary worlds, solely because they are trembling in fear of the impending court verdicts.
