Further escalating the military situation initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February, a massive series of attacks has been launched against the American embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. These rocket and drone attacks, which occurred on the night of March 16 and the early morning of March 17, are reported to be the most severe attacks targeting the American embassy since the current conflict began.
These attacks were launched from several areas around Baghdad by armed groups supported by Iran, with the Green Zone, a highly secure area where the embassy and other diplomatic buildings are located, being the primary target. With this sudden attack, the American C-RAM air defense systems were activated, taking steps to destroy numerous airborne threats. Accordingly, American defense forces managed to shoot down at least two of the five drones heading towards the embassy in mid-air. However, one drone that broke through the defense network crashed inside the embassy compound, and foreign media reported large plumes of smoke and fires observed from the area afterward. Additionally, another drone fell on the Al-Rasheed Hotel in the Green Zone, causing large explosions and fires, but no official reports of casualties from the attack have been made yet.
Even before this incident, on March 14, a missile attack was launched on the helicopter pad within the embassy compound, damaging parts of the C-RAM defense system. International media indicates that this latest attack, a continuation of the same series of attacks, was carried out using a swarm of drones with the aim of crippling defense systems. Following the attack, Iraqi security forces immediately sealed off the Green Zone and took steps to strengthen security in Baghdad. Meanwhile, due to the continuously escalating insecurity and risks such as kidnappings in the region, the American embassy has also issued an urgent security alert advising all American citizens remaining in Iraq to leave the country immediately.
