It is reported that a large number of devotees have been gathering at the Gangaramaya Temple in Hunupitiya, Colombo, since this morning (05) to worship the Sacred Relics of the Buddha, which were brought to Sri Lanka from the historic Devnimori sacred site in Gujarat State, India.
This marks the first instance these Relics have been brought outside India. Providing this rare opportunity for Sri Lankan Buddhists to worship, the Relics were brought to the island yesterday (04) and enshrined on a special pedestal at the Gangaramaya Temple.
People from all over the island are currently flocking to the temple to participate in this historic meritorious occasion and witness the physical Relics of the Supreme Buddha. Devotees have been given the opportunity to worship 24 hours a day, both day and night, from today until February 11th at 07:00 AM.
Due to the large crowds visiting the temple, a special security program has been implemented in Gangaramaya and its surrounding areas. Additionally, a 24-hour 'dansala' (alms-giving stall) has been organized for the convenience of devotees.
To expand transport facilities for pilgrims, the Railway Department has taken steps to operate several special trains from today, running from Avissawella, Rambukkana, and Aluthgama to Colombo Fort.
To control traffic congestion around the temple, the police have arranged to close several roads. However, several free parking lots have also been prepared for the vehicles of devotees coming for worship.
